In an incident that has once again raised questions over the safety of women in the city, a 14-year-old girl from Charkop was stalked, harassed and assaulted by two local goons for more than six months before she was finally kidnapped in October. She was raped repeatedly over for more than a month and was being held hostage in a Goa hotel when the Mumbai crime branch finally rescued her on Monday.
Just two days before she was kidnapped, the victim had filed a complaint at Borivli police station alleging that the duo — Manish Khanolkar, 24, and Kalpesh Parmar, 26 — had assaulted her. Showing a complete lack of concern, the Borivli police let them go after booking them under bailable sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The police had the option of charging the two accused under stringent non-bailable sections such as criminal conspiracy and common intent.
