To make glass-pane buildings in the city fire-safe and ensure wider adherence to fire-safety norms, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to frame guidelines for glass facades and also set up a dedicated cell under the Fire Brigade to conduct regular inspections of all buildings in the city.
The civic building proposals department has been tasked with finalising guidelines to be followed by builders and occupants of buildings with glass facades.
A separate cell and guidelines would ensure stringent implementation of fire-safety rules. The immediate focus of the cell would be to carry out inspections on an immediate basis of glass facades and high-rises in the city as fires in these structures are the most difficult to control.
“The purpose of forming the cell is to divide operations of the Fire Brigade into firefighting and inspection. The core branch would concentrate on firefighting operations, while the special cell will enforce implementation of fire-safety norms,” said Manisha Mhaiskar, additional municipal commissioner.
The separate cell would comprise of 100 officials and its target would be to inspect 70-80 lakh buildings a year. “With this, we hope to complete inspections of almost all city structures in the next three years,” added Mhaiskar.
