Enraged by an assault on one of their colleagues on Saturday, engineers of G/south ward have decided to cease all work in the ward from Monday.
Engineers from all other wards will also join their G/south counterparts at the ward’s NM Joshi Marg office and launch a protest march to the municipal headquarters.
On Saturday, Shiv Sena Corporator from G/south ward, Sanjay Agaldare, went to meet sub-engineer Mahesh Pawar to discuss the water zoning issue. The situation escalated into a fight and the latter was injured. He was sent to KEM Hospital for a medical check-up.
The Municipal Engineers’ Association (MEA), which is launching the agitation, has demanded Agaldare’s arrest.
“Engineers from Andheri were assaulted on December 22 and we spoke to the municipal commissioner about the need for increased security,” said MEA secretary Sukhdeo Kashid. “After Saturday’s occurrence, we have really had enough. We cannot continue working like this.”
Kashid confirmed that no engineer in the G/south ward would work from Monday and engineers from all other wards would be lending their support.
“If (civic) Commissioner Swadheen Kshatriya doesn’t take our demands seriously then we will hold a dharna at Mantralaya to pursue our demands,” he said.
