Sixteen-year-old Manpreet Premsingh Kular, a Class 10 student, hanged herself at her residence in Mulund on Sunday afternoon.
According to her mother’s statement, Kular was stressed about her upcoming board exams.
Mulund police officials said that the incident took place when Kular’s mother had gone to the Gurudwara to offer prayers for her.
Kular had stayed back to prepare for her exams.
When Kular’s mother returned to her house located at Namdev Dhotre Chawl at Guru Govind Marg at noon, she found the door locked from inside.
“After repeatedly knocking on the door for a while, Kular’s mother called the neighbours. Some people came and broke open the door to find Manpreet dangling from the ceiling with a dupatta,” said P.B. Landge, senior police inspector of Mulund police station.
The police have recorded the statement of Kular’s mother, who said that the teenager was depressed and stressed about her studies.
“Kular’s exams were approaching and she was tensed about them. Exam stress led the girl to end her life. However, Kular’s mother said that Manpreet was never pressurized about academics and she was a bright student,” added Landge.
The police have registered a case of accidental death and are investigating to find out whether Kular was facing any other problems.
The girl’s father and brother are truck drivers and were not present in the house she committed suicide.
The travel for 15-20 days sometimes for work, police officials added.
