A Class 8 student from a school in Andheri (West) allegedly committed suicide on Friday evening after her mother scolded her for coming late from school.

According to the Versova police, Navamita Sanilapujari (13), a resident of Manibai building in Versova village, lived with her mother and sister.

Her father works in Dubai. The girl returned at 3 pm when her mother scolded her, as she was late for studies.

The girl did not say anything to her mother and did not talk to anybody.

“After scolding her, the girl’s mother went to the market. When she retuned she found the door of the house locked from inside and no one responded to the knocks,” said Police Sub Inspector S. Shinde.

When her mother and neighbours broke open the door, they were shocked to see her hanging from the ceiling fan.

She was rushed to a nearby private hospital but she was declared dead by the doctors.

The mother then informed the police who reached the spot and sent the girl’s body for

postmortem at Cooper Hospital.

There was no suicide note found near the body.

The police are now taking statements from the girl’s mother, sister and friends to find if there was any reason behind her suicide apart from the scolding.
