Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday scrapped a seven-month direction barring probationary teachers from other districts from resuming their duties in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.

Former chief minister Ashok Chavan at the behest of industry minister Narayan Rane had taken a decision to this effect. By reversing his predecessor’s order, CM also indicated that Rane would not get a free hand in coastal Konkan. Following the latest order, teachers have now been asked to resume work in 15 days.

But CM, however, approved of Rane’s demand that locals should be given preference from next academic year. Rane argued that an outside probationer, who gets a mere Rs3,000 as monthly remuneration for the first three years, would not be able to afford a comfortable stay in the new place. A government statement said that a policy decision would be taken in this regard soon.

Sources in the Congress said that the CM’s decision was a fitting reply to Rane, whose newspaper reported last week that the CM had not cleared 800 important files in100 days. Local trained graduates, who had failed to clear the state-level common entrance test, raised objections when more than 1,000 probationary teachers were recruited in these two districts last year.
