Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has given in to the arm-twisting tactics adopted by 12 independent legislators from the state, who had threatened to boycott Friday’s Rajya Sabha by-polls. Chavan assured the MLAs that development work in the range of Rs20 crore to Rs45 crore would be undertaken in their respective constituencies in the next three years.

The largesse, a tool to woo the disgruntled legislators, is expected to come from the state exche-quer, as it has not been accounted for in the state budget.

Unmindful of the impending burden on state exchequer, Chavan took the independents' threat so seriously that he organised two meetings with them on Wednesday and Thursday.
