Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday said he would decide on what action to take in connection with the arrests of the two young women from Palghar only after looking at the inquiry report, which will be submitted to him on Wednesday by the special inspector general (Konkan range).
“We are trying to find out whether the officer(s) in charge did not follow the senior’s advice on not applying certain sections of the Indian Penal Code in the arrests,” said Chavan, rejecting the demand that the police officials be punished and charges against the girls be dropped immediately.
A source from the CM’s office said the officers are said to have acted under pressure from the complainant and applied unwarranted sections despite being advised by seniors to let the two women free after filing a non-cognisable case.
The two women, Shaheen Dhada and Rinu Srinivasan, were granted bail on Monday after they furnished personal bonds and sent to 14 days’ judicial custody.
