Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Tuesday reiterated that the state would be tough with errant road contractors. He also plans to send engineers with the government and civic bodies abroad for training in modern road construction techniques.

Replying to a question on the state of roads in Mumbai and the rest of the state, Chavan said in the Legislative Assembly that one could doubt the quality of roadwork as some contracts were given at rates much lower than the base, estimated figure.

“In Mumbai, a significant share of the BMC’s annual budget is spent on building and repairing roads,” he said.
