Samta Nagar police on Friday arrested Sujit Yadav (21), a Thakur College student for allegedly murdering his younger brother and almost killing his mother.

He was reportedly upset with his mother for disapproving of a girl he was interested in, the police investigation revealed. Sujit’s friend Vinod Yadav (21), who lives in the same area, and executed the murder, has also been arrested. They were presented in a local court, which sent them to police custody till February 16.

Sujit’s brother Ajit (18) and mother Lilavati (40) were reportedly stabbed on Friday morning. His father Mahendra (45) was also sleeping in their one-room shanty in Samta Nagar, when the incident happened.

In his police statement, Sujit first said two unknown assailants had entered the room when he had gone to the toilet in the morning.

Police sources said they found several loopholes in that statement, and later found he was in love with a girl from his area.

His mother disapproved of her, and, about two months ago, had visited the girl’s house and complained to her parents. Sources said this had angered Sujit so much he decided to kill his mother to be with the girl.

Sujit then allegedly offered Vinod half the insurance money he would get from the death of his mother. On the day of the incident, Vinod entered the room and mistakenly stabbed Ajit instead of Lilavati due to the darkness.

“When Lilavati began screaming after seeing her son stabbed, Vinod assaulted her as well,” said Senior Police Inspector Ananat Kenjle.

Sources said Sujit was present in the room at the time, and had covered his face with black cloth and watched while Vinod stabbed his mother and brother.
