Confusion prevailed on Day 1 of the new tariff for taxis in the city. From Monday midnight the basic taxi fare was hiked by Re 1. So, the minimum fare has increased from Rs 16 to Rs 17 with an addition of 50paise for every extra kilometre.
However, neither passengers nor cabbies were aware about the revised tariff as printed cards of the revised fares have not been issued. While some taxi drivers continued to charge the old rates, others demanded the revised fare. By evening most of the taxi drivers began charging the revised basic fare.
The confusion was greater with electronic meters as they have not been programmed according to the new fare.
Mumbai Taximens’ Union leader AL Quadros said, “Taxi drivers have started charging as per the revised tariff, which is the basic fare of Rs17. The printed tariff card will be released on Tuesday, till then we are charging as per the fare declared in the media.”
