Cong high command seeks report on Mumbai debacle
State leadership asked to explain unforseen drubbing, to fix responsibility.mumbai Updated: Feb 19, 2012 01:29 IST
A day after the Mumbai civic poll debacle, senior Congress leaders went into a huddle as the party high command asked them on Saturday to explain the poor show within 10 days.
The All India Congress Committee (AICC) sought details after chief minister Prithviraj Chavan took responsibility for the defeat and also offered to quit. The high command has turned down the CM’s offer, but it wants him to share the reasons that caused party’s unforeseen downfall in the city.
On Saturday, Chavan met party chiefs of the city, Kripashankar Singh, and of the state, Manikaro Thakre, and industries minister Narayan Rane at his residence to finalise the outline of the report, which will also analyse Congress’ performance in Thane. The Congress and NCP fought Mumbai and Thane polls together for the first time.
Reliable sources in the Congress told HT that the report will deal with all aspects that according to the seniors wiped out the party’s high hopes. The document is likely to hold MPs, MLAs, district presidents and local ministers responsible for not getting expected number of nominees elected.
Singh, who is expected to help the CM in authoring the report, did not deny or confirm the development. “I will not comment on this because Mr Chavan has already discussed the results with the media. We’re still in the process of analysing the results.”
Meanwhile, Rane came down heavily on local organisers for failing in planning an effective campaign. He was even more critical of rebels and their supporters within the party. Rane summed it up as a ‘defeat of the Congress by the Congress’.
Later in the day, senior Congress and NCP leaders met at Chavan’s residence to analyse the civic and zilla parishad polls. The two discussed possibilities of forging a post-poll alliance in cities like Pune, Amravati, Akola and Solapur where they contested separately. An alliance between the two is also possible in more than 20 ZPs where they have numbers to come to power jointly.
