Three persons, including a police constable, were arrested on Tuesday for kidnapping a professional with an Andheri-based firm.
The kidnappers pretending to be CBI officers approached Nimbalkar at his office on Saturday and told him that he had been named by an accused in a cyber fraud case amounting to Rs 5 lakh.
Nimbalkar denied his involvement but the accused got in their accomplice Lalu confirming that the arrested person had taken his name and Lalu’s name during interrogations.
The accused knew Nimbalkar however the police are trying to ascertain the involvement of constable Kiran Ravan.
“Lalu convinced Nimbalkar to bribe the officers. But when Nimbalkar asked them about the bribe, the accused allegedly kidnapped him and took him to Goregaon where Ravan was posted,” said an officer.
The CBI officers then asked Nimbalkar to give them Rs 1 lakh. Nimbalkar agreed and called up his friend who reached the spot with Rs 20,000.
The CBI officers made Nimbalkar withdraw Rs 5,000 more from an ATM and then took Nimbalkar to Kurar village saying they wanted more money.
“But the left Nimbalkar and fled. On reaching home Nimbalkar got a call from Lalu who told him to pay up the rest of the amount if he wanted to save himself,” said the officer.
Later, Nimbalkar approached the Amboli police on Sunday and registered a case.
“Based on the descriptions from Nimbalkar, we have arrested the three men on the charges of extortion, threatening and kidnapping and also impersonation,” said the officer.
