A constable with the Tardeo traffic division suffered from a dislocated elbow after he was assaulted for intervening in a parking brawl between two groups at Girgaum on Friday. The DB Marg police have arrested two people and are looking for at least four others who assaulted the on-duty constable.
Around 2.15pm, 33-year-old Sanjay Patil heard some commotion in the parking space opposite Samrat Hotel on Mama Parmanand Marg. When he found that the spat was over parking and that it could get out of hand, he went to the scene to cool down tempers.
"The moment he tried to intervene between the two groups, [of two and four people each] they pushed him around. They told him he was no one to intervene in their problem, and pushed him hard causing him to fall to the ground and dislocate his elbow," said an officer of DB Marg police. Patil was taken to Saifee Hospital, where he was provided with treatment and discharged later.
Seeing their colleague being assaulted, Patil's colleagues rushed to his aid and caught Sandeep Davrug, 31, and Hemant Surti, 32, who are employed with private firms. Four others managed to flee after they saw the policemen running towards them. The police have registered a case of assaulting a public servant and disrupting a public servant from discharging his duty against all the accused.
