Consumer redressal camp gets poor response

With only eight complainants and no representatives from private companies, the first consumer grievance redressal camp organised by the Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI) at Dhobi Talao, on Friday, was a dismal show.

“We had asked the corporate representatives to attend the camp. We cannot force them to attend the camp. As this is the first time that such an event is being held, they must have had apprehensions about how the discussion would go,” said MS Kamath, secretary, CGSI. “Next time, we might tweak the format. We will try to arrange visits to their offices with the complaints,” he said.

It was a disappointment for complainants such as JC Maan, a Belapur resident, who had come to Dhobi Talao because he had an issue with a human resources firm since 2011.

“I have tried to meet them earlier, too, but have failed each time. I thought this would be an ideal opportunity chance to discuss the issue. But, they didn’t show up,” said Maan, who runs a shipping company.

The complaints ranged from faulty mobile handsets to fraud by builders.

“While we were expecting hundreds of complaints, we received only 45, of which 30 were resolved amicably,” said Kamath. “Among the rest, several cases were too complicated,” he said.

However, representatives from the state department of legal metrology (weights and measures) visited the office to look into the complaints on cheating over maximum retail price (MRP).

The CGSI plans to conduct a camp to look at the MRP disputes after two weeks.
