Police sub-inspector Manoj Londe, who has been accused of blackmailing and raping a 21-year-old airline employee over a period of two years, surrendered before the police and was arrested on Monday.
“We managed to contact Londe and asked him to surrender. He presented himself before us following which he was arrested,” said Vineet Agarwal, additional commissioner of police (central region).
The Vinoba Bhave Nagar police on Sunday registered a case against Londe, who is posted at Gadchiroli, after the victim filed a complaint alleging that he had been abusing and raping her for the past two years. The Kurla resident also claimed that he extorted money from her by threatening to post some sensitive MMS clips of her on the Internet.
Sources said the victim had approached the Vinoba Bhave Nagar police in 2009 to register a complaint against Londe, who was posted there at the time. “But the police personnel convinced her to not file a complaint saying that it would destroy Londe’s marriage,” a police officer said, requesting anonymity.
“We will investigate Londe in connection with the victim’s allegations,” Agarwal said.
The police said the victim first met Londe, a 2007 batch state police officer, when she had gone to the Vinoba Bhave Nagar police station two years ago. The two – both are married – then allegedly had an affair. Later, according to the complaint, Londe started blackmailing her for money. Even after he was transferred to Gadchiroli last year, the victim said he continued to harass her for money.
Londe allegedly came to the city last week and tried to force himself upon the victim.
