The Kasturba Marg police arrested two men including a policeman, on Thursday, for allegedly kidnapping a two-and-a-half-year-old boy from Borivli.
The accused, Dattatrey Rathod (44) is from Amboli police station and his friend, Santosh Parab (40) is a flower vendor.
Ashish, the child who was kidnapped, has been rescued, said the police.
“The accused would be produced before the Borivli Metropolitan Court on Friday,” said Rajendra Thakur, senior inspector of the Kasturba Marg police station.
Rathod told the police that he had three daughters and was longing for a son, who would be the family heir, said the police.
Rathod had kidnapped the boy on Monday morning while he was sleeping on the footpath with his family, outside their hutment at Maruti chawl in Borivli(east), said the police.
The police said that a beat marshal while patrolling the area, had spotted the two accused on the day of the incident.
“Around 3.30 am, a beat marshal had stopped and questioned the two men while patrolling. After Rathod told the marshal that he was a policeman, the latter left the spot following which the accused picked up Ashish in his arms and ran away,” added Thakur.
Ashok Radhekri , the victim’s father had lodged a complaint the same day.
“The police then traced Rathod’s address to Mahakali Police Line at Andheri (East). A police team was sent to his house on Wednesday afternoon where they found Ashish. Nobody in the accused’s house questioned about the child as Rathod’s wife had gone to the village,” said Thakur. Rathod then led the police to Parab who was arrested from Goregaon West, added Thakur.
