A police sub-inspector was arrested on Wednesday for illegally detaining a woman, who had been accused of stealing her neighbour’s jewellery, at the Malvani police station for two days.

The woman, who tried to end her life by hanging herself inside the women’s restroom at the police station on Tuesday evening, is recuperating at Raksh hospital in Malad.

Sub-Inspector Munir Shaikh, 57, had detained Kunda Shinde, 43, on Monday after her neighbour S Sawant alleged that she had stolen her mangalsutra and gold chain worth Rs 3 lakh.

Shaikh, who is due to retire next year, was the night duty officer at the Malvani police station when Sawant, a resident of Shivaji Nagar in Madh area, filed the complaint.

“Shaikh detained Shinde but neither made an entry of it in the dairy nor arrest her. If he was not confident of her committing the theft he should have conducted inquiries and let her go,” said Vashisth Andhale, senior inspector of the Malwani police station.

“Shaikh should have also kept a watch on her at the police station. On Tuesday evening, Shinde went to the bathroom. While returning to the room she saw a nylon rope, picked it up and again went to the bathroom and tried to hang herself. A woman constable, who went to the bathroom at the same time, saved her,” Andhale added.

The police have charged Shaikh for punishment for wrongful restraint, wrongful confinement for three or more days) and wrongful confinement to extort confession, or compel restoration of property under the Indian Penal Code.

The police have also booked Shinde for attempt to commit suicide and will record her statement when she would be able to talk.
