An on-duty assistant inspector (API) attached with the Versova police sustained grievous injuries after he was hit by a drunk motorcyclist at a nakabandi in Andheri (West) on Sunday.
The police said the 20-year-old biker Shahid Mohammad Dongarkar is a disc jockey and was riding the bike under the influence of alcohol.
At around 2.50 am, API Balaji Dahiphule was posted at a nakabandi at JP Road in Andheri (West) when Dongarkar, riding a red Hero Honda, approached the nakabandi at high speed, with a friend Sajjid Solanki riding pillion. Dongarkar was heading toward Seven Bungalows from Versova village. Dahiphule, who had two to three constables with him, waved the biker down, but Dongarkar continued to speed towards the barricade.
“The biker assumed he would dodge the barricade and the inspector and speed through. However, he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into Dahiphule,” said an official from the Versova police.
Dahiphule sustained grievous injuries on his head, chest, knees, legs, elbows and eyes and was rushed to Cooper Hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU. He is said to be in critical condition. The police said that Dongarkar and the 18-year-old pillion rider fell off the bike because of the impact of the collision, but they were not seriously injured.
Dongarkar was arrested and booked under relevant IPC sections. “Both Dongarkar and Solkar were reeking of liquor. Dongarkar's medical examination confirmed he had consumed alcohol,” said the official.
However, a holiday court released Dongarkar on a cash bail of Rs 15,000 on Sunday. Officers at the Versova police station were unhappy that Dongarkar was given bail, as Dahiphule is still battling for life at the hospital.
