The Navghar police and the social service branch of the Mumbai police, along with an NGO, cracked down an alleged prostitution racket at Mira Road on Saturday. Four girls, including two minors, were rescued and five alleged agents - all of whom were related to the victims - were arrested.

Among the accused were the mother and aunt of the two minors, and the husbands of the two adult victims.

The Navghar police said that after they received a tip off about the flesh trade operating from the hotel, they planted a decoy, who approached the alleged agents, posing as a brothel owner, and told them he was looking for a few girls for his 'business.'

A price of Rs1.8 lakh per girl was fixed and a meeting was arranged at the hotel on Saturday.

The police arrived at the meeting and the five accused - Pramila Majumdar, 32, Subroto Mandal, 25, Ruksana Shaikh, 22, Harun Mandal and Anoop Mandal, 24 - were arrested. Pramila is the mother of the two minors, while Ruksana is their aunt.

"Two of the men, on the other hand, were trying to sell their wives. Subroto was their friend. The decoy got in touch with Majumdar, a Malwani resident, to strike the deal," said Dinkar Pingle, senior inspector, Navghar police station.

The rescued girls have been put in the care of an NGO in Kandivli.

The accused have been charged under various sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA).

"We are now trying to find out if there was a larger racket at work,' said Pingle.
