The DB Marg police on Friday arrested a 30-year-old wageworker for allegedly robbing his employer of diamonds worth Rs1.25 crore 10 days ago. The accused was remanded in police custody till May 14 after being produced before a magistrate’s court on Saturday, the police said.

The accused, Kanhaiyalal alias Karan alias Kannu Dayalal Dave, was hired on daily contract by Kesariya enterprises at Prasad Chambers in south Mumbai on April 24, the police said. On May 2, Dave’s 51-year-old employer and complainant, Paras Bhavarlal Kochar, a diamond trader, allotted 529 carats of diamonds to Dave and two other employees for segregation according to their quality.

However, during the lunch break, when the other two employees had left the premises, Dave fled with the diamonds. Kochar subsequently registered a complaint with the DB Marg police station.

The police said that since Dave had not turned up after the lunch break, the police got suspicious about him and began enquiring with his friends and relatives. ACP Ananth Jadhav of Girgaon division said, “Dave was traced on Friday in the diamond market in Malad (East) near Liberty garden. He was selling the gems when we nabbed him.”

The police have so far recovered Rs1.22 crore of the burgled precious stones stones.

“We are interrogating Dave and should be able to recover the remaining property soon. It is not certain yet if he has sold the remaining diamonds,” said Ajit Surve, senior inspector of DB Marg police station.

The police said that Dave, a native of Ahmedabad in Gujarat, came to the city a decade ago to seek employment. He is married and has a one-and-a-half-year-old son from the marriage. He does not have any known previous criminal records.

A case under section 381 of the Indian Penal code for theft by a clerk or servant of property in possession of master has been registered against him at DB Marg police station.
