The VP Road police have busted a gang of five motorcycle thieves and recovered eight stolen motorcycles from them. The police were led to the gang by a 20-year-old who was spotted dragging a high-end Hyosung sports bike post midnight on Friday. The cops trailed the boy and later took him to the police station when he could not provide appropriate papers for the bike.

During preliminary investigation, the 20-year-old, Siddharth Waghmare, admitted that he and his gang of school friends used to steal motorcycles. He led the police to his friends, Chintan Waghmode, Anil Kadu, Keyur Kamble and Vaibhav Waghe, who operated as a gang to steal bikes.

The police suspect that the accused used the stolen bikes to snatch chains. Rajendra Chavan, senior inspector of VP Marg police said, “All the accused are school friends and stole bikes to commit crimes like chain snatching. We are trying to get details of how many bikes they have stolen, and the areas they have targeted.”

During the course of investigation, the police discovered that the accused have similar cases registered with the other police stations, including Marine Drive and Gamdevi police station.

The police also arrested two 20-year-olds, Tanmay Waghmare and Mihir Naik, who were found snatching chains on motorbike. The police recovered 16 grams of valuables from them.
