The Mumbai police are facing an online backlash for their moral policing act on Sunday night at a lounge in Malad, where they detained and fined 31 youths for dancing ‘indecently’. The campaign, launched on Facebook by one of the youths who was at the Oro Lounge and Kitchen, termed the police action as ‘Taliban-style moral policing’.
Started at 5.30pm on Monday at www.facebook.com/stop.moral.police, the campaign had 39 supporters within an hour. “About 50% of the people, who were fined Rs1,200, hadn’t even had drinks. They were call centre employees, who had dropped in to have dinner after their late shift,” said a message on the page.
The protestors even found support from Australia. “This is nonsense... what next, cover up Khajuraho,” posted Naveen Kumar from Melbourne.
