The JJ Marg police have recovered Rs 1.1 crore cash and jewellery from the house of the tantrik, who raped six girls and the maid of a Colaba-based family.

Jainul Abidin Shaikh, 37, alias Mehdi Kasam, arrested for raping seven girls, had been extorting money from the family for the past five years. Investigations led the officers to a rented flat in Thane. Police found over Rs 87 lakh in cash and jewellery worth Rs 13 lakh from there. According to the police, Shaikh had also rented houses in Dongri, Chunabhatti and JJ Marg.

Originally from West Bengal, Shaikh would regularly visit Mumbai. In 1999, he came in contact with one of the victim’s mother and told her about his skills in Arabic as he had graduated in the language from Uttar Pradesh University. He gained access to the family by offering to teach the children Arabic. However, the private tuitions were stopped within six months.

The woman later introduced Shaikh to her sister. Over a course of time, he learnt about a genetic disorder that ran through the family. In 2006, he told them he could perform black magic to cure the problem.

Investigations revealed that Shaikh bought a book on black magic and learnt to cure common ailments like cough and cold. “His intention was only to extract money,” said Cherring Dorje, deputy commissioner of police, zone 1. “In 2008, he realised that the family trusted him and he had complete freedom with the girls. That is when he started to rape them.” “The tantrik books and powder have been sent for forensic analysis,” said S Bagwe, inspector, JJ Marg police station.
