The MRA Marg police have arrested two men carrying cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 1.89 crore at a nakabandi at Kalpana junction on P D’Mello Road behind CST station.

The duo could not disclose source of the valuables found on them, and the police are now trying to track down the origins.

According to Sanjeev Kokil, senior police inspector from the MRA Marg police station, officers at the nakabandi intercepted a taxi plying the duo as they were carrying large travel bags.

As the officers searched the bags, they found gold valuables and raw gold nuggets weighing up to 8.5 kg, which are estimated to be worth Rs 1.73 crore, and cash to the tune of Rs 16 lakh.

When the duo, identified as Amit Dhanesha and Malu Ramchandra, who work as transporters were asked about the valuables, they claimed that they worked for a jeweller and had just come from Raipur after concluding a transaction.

However, they did not possess any documents to support their claims and on the grounds of suspicion, they were brought to the police station and later arrested.

Dhanesha and Ramchandra were produced before a Ballard Pier magistrate court, where they were released on a bail of Rs 10,000 each.
