A sketch of the woman suspected to have stolen babies from hospitals in Govandi and Santacruz in the past two months was released by the police on Tuesday.
However, despite having the sketch in their possession for some time now, the investigating agencies have not been able to track down the woman.
A two-month-old boy was stolen from the civic health centre in Shivaji Nagar on November 15. The police suspect the woman who stole the baby from there to be involved in a similar case, wherein a two-month-old boy was stolen from the BMC-run VN Desai Hospital in Santacruz on October 15 by a burqa-clad woman. “We even had a crucial lead in the Shivaji Nagar case, as the mother of Shahid Tahir, the kidnapped infant, managed to see the face of the burqa-clad woman. We made a sketch and have been trying to trace the woman withoutu success,” said an officer who is part of the investigating team, on condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to talk to the media.
“We combed the entire Shivaji Nagar-Govandi area, but did not come across anyone matching the sketch. There is a possibility that the woman is still using the veil to hide her face, making it difficult for us to spot her,” the officer added.
“We suspect that the woman in both the baby thefts is the same as the sketch prepared with the help of the eyewitnesses are similar. We have been co-ordinating with investigators in the Santacruz case as well,” the officer added.
Senior police inspector DS Jodgudri from Shivaji Nagar police station, said, “ So far we have not had success in the case. Investigations are on.”
