Cops rescue 90 women, minors in bar raid

Ninety women, including 32 minors, were rescued during a late night raid by the Thane police (rural) at a bar and a lodge on Thursday. Forty five people were arrested from Kapal bar and Dimple lodge in Panvel and Rs 1.15 crore in cash and around Rs 24 lakh worth of jewellery seized.

The raid was conducted on the instructions of inspector general, Konkan range, Sukhvinder Singh following a complaint by James Varghese who belongs to an NGO Indian Rescue Mission to the director general of police.

The bar is located in Bhingari village on the old Mumbai-Pune highway. The police team comprising five officers and 14 personnel was led by additional superintendent of police, Thane (rural) Sangramsingh Nishandar.

Nishandar said, “The women were from Rajasthan, Karnataka, West Bengal, and other states. Among those arrested are owner Joyesh Shetty, several agents and waiters. One of the owners, Raju Shetty, is yet to be arrested.”

Apart from Rs 1.15 crore in cash, the police also seized 107 tolas of gold jewellery in the raid. The accused have been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.
