Unhappy with the findings of the first post-mortem report in the alleged ‘honour killings’ of Murbad couple — Pramod Dhangar, 21, and Shaila Pawar, 20, — the police went for a second post-mortem to ascertain whether the couple had committed suicide as was made out to be or was murdered as was alleged by their families.

The bodies were sent to JJ Hospital, Mumbai, but the doctors, who conducted second post-mortem on Murbad couple, have reserved their opinion on the issue. Police will now have to wait for viscera report to decide if it was a case of murder or suicide.

Probe into Dhangar and Pawar’s death had been transferred to the special investigation team. The police found a bottle of poison and a suicide note from the spot where their bodies were recovered.

“The investigation will be headed by an IPS officer Nagesh Lohar and they will work under my supervision,” said Vishwas Nangre-Patil, SP, Thane Rural.

Police have hired forensic lab experts and a dog squad to inspect the spot and the lab is expected to submit its report within a month.

Dhangar and Pawar wanted to get married, but their families were opposed to their alliance. While the boy was a Dalit, the girl belonged to the Kunbi community.

The families alleged it to be case of ‘honour killing, with the boy’s family blaming girl’s parents for he was a Dalit and while the girl’s family alleging the boy’s family for killing the young couple. The police thus had to file two complaints in the case.
