Although a case of abetment of suicide has been registered against sub-inspector Munir Shaikh, the Malwani police said they are waiting for the court’s order to arrest him.
Shaikh was booked after the domestic help, who was illegally confined on December 21, attempted suicide in the Malwani police lock-up. She later died in a hospital.
The police had earlier said Shaikh was absconding after he found out that a case of abetment had been registered against him. They later said he was not absconding but would be arrested when the court directs them to do so.
“He was not absconding. We had called him up and told him to be present in the police station today. He told us that he was at Kalyan and would come. However, he did not come and so now we will have to track him down,” said Ramrao Pawar, additional commissioner of police (north region).
Shaikh had allegedly detained Kunda Shinde, a resident of Madh Island, after her neighbour complained that she had stolen her valuables. He was arrested for illegal confinement and was released on bail. After Shinde’s death, the police registered another case against Shaikh for abetting suicide. “We will arrest him soon,” said Pawar.
