Growers' Cooperative Federation is set to start its much-awaited cotton procurement from tomorrow. “Over 90 centres will be opened on the first day across the state and we would procure cotton at the rate of Rs 3,000 per quintal," Federation Chairman N P Hirani said. At least 10 of these centres would be in Yavatmal district, he said.
Asked how the federation is expecting to attract the cotton growers when the current market rate is Rs 4,000 per quintal, Hirani said they had tried to convince the Centre on the price front on a number of occasions but to no avail.
“I am not sure how many farmers would sell their cotton to the Federation at the rate of Rs 3,000 a quintal,” he said.
“The cotton growers are free to sell their produce to any one who gives them higher price," Hirani added.
