The parking area of the Mumbai Port Trust (BPT) at Cotton Green is a secluded spot, which is almost deserted at night. In the wake of the recent gang-rape, the police plan to write to the trust to deploy security guard and install streetlights in the area.

Shekhar Tawade, senior inspector, Kalachowki police station, said, “We will write to the port trust to increase the safety measures by keeping more watchmen and putting up more streetlights in the area.”

Mehmood, who sells tea near the parking lot, said, “Truck drivers frequent the area during the day, but by evening most of them either leave or sleep in their trucks.”

“Some of the roads under the bridge of Cotton Green station are very secluded at night,” said another trucker.

“The watchmen don’t generally suspect anything suspicious may be going on inside the trucks that are parked near the main road. People might take use of this perception to indulge in criminal activities,” he said.
