A Mira Road couple has been booked for allegedly assaulting a traffic constable .

But Riyaz and Mumtaz Khan, who have been admitted to VN Desai hospital, claimed it was Constable Tohar Gomze who had assaulted them, without any provocation.

“At 2.30 pm, the couple were riding on a bike from Bandra to Mira Road. When they crossed the Gold Spot junction at Andheri, a traffic constable flagged them down,” said Abdul Wahab, Riyaz’s brother and a naval serviceman.

“Riyaz slowed the bike and passed the constable by a few feet. Another constable, who was standing a few feet away, caught Riyaz’s sleeve, causing him to lose balance. and we fell on Gomze,” said Mumtaz, a school teacher.

Angry, Gomze started beating up the couple, though Riyaz had fractured his hand while Mumtaz suffered injuries on her waist, claimed Wahab.

But the traffic police refute the allegations.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (West Region) Mirza Baig said, “Khan cut a lane and so Gomze tried to stop him. But Khan, who was speeding, knocked him down and fell, injuring himself.”

“After getting up, Khan tried to assault Tohar. The case was brought to the attention of the Andheri police and a case of interfering with public duty and assaulting public servant was filed against Khan,” said Baig.

On Tuesday morning, the Andheri police visited the couple at the hospital to take their statements, said Wahab.
