In a daring daylight robbery, three unidentified persons attacked an employee of an angadia (courier) firm and robbed him of Rs. 20 lakh on Wednesday afternoon.
The incident happened around 4 pm when 27-year-old Sanjay Thakur, employed with Babulal Jain Angadia firm, was on his way to deliver money to a businessman.
When Thakur reached Cotton Exchange near LT Marg, three persons in a car halted the vehicle near him, forced him into the car and sped away, said police sources.
When Thakur refused to part with the money, they attacked him with a chopper, the sources added.
After around 15 minutes, the trio let Thakur off near JJ Hospital. Locals who saw a bleeding Thakur, who had suffered injuries to his hands, offered him water and took him to JJ Hospital.
Avinash Sonavane, senior inspector of LT Marg police station, said: “Thakur was in the car for around 20 minutes. He couldn’t see the number of the car, but we are tracing the accused with the help of information that Thakur has given us.”
The police are also checking Thakur’s antecedents to ascertain if he had any role in the robbery, as it was surprising that a person could be forced into a vehicle in a crowded area like Cotton Exchange, said a police official, requesting anonymity.
Thakur has been working with the firm at Popalwadi area in Kalbadevi since the last six years, police said.
The police have registered a case under Sections 363 (kidnapping), 392 (robbery), 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery) and 397 (robbery or dacoity with attempt to cause death or grievous hurt) of the Indian Penal Code.
