Bollywood actress Preity Zinta was acquitted of a cheque bouncing case by a metropolitan magistrate’s court in Andheri on Monday. The case against the actress was filed by a scriptwriter Abbas Tyrewala in 2013 alleging that the actress had failed to pay him, and a cheque issued by the actress had bounced.
On February 20, 2013, Tyrewala had filed a case against the actress alleging that a cheque of Rs18.9 lakh given to him as remuneration for a script he wrote for her film ‘Ishq in Paris’ had bounced, following which the actress had even face a non-bailable warrant when she failed to respond to a summons to appear before the court.
Later in her defence, Zinta had alleged that Tyrewala was issued a cheque after her company had assigned him work with respect to the said film, but Tyrewala had failed to finish the work. And since Tyrewala had failed to deliver, the cheque was stopped. Zinta had claimed that Tyrewala’s allegations were false.
Zinta’s advocate Neha Prashank said that the court has held that it was a false case.
“Our defence was that on the date when we issued a cheque there was no liability on us for it. The work for which the cheque was issued was not done. Even further from the legal perspective also, he himself had not reflected the said transaction in his books of account. Basically the amount he had sought for was unaccounted.”
Neha further added that the court has considered all the issues and acquitted ZInta. However, she added, “we are yet to get a final copy of the order to see the reasoning.”
The court had begun the hearing on the case from May 2014 and the arguments had concluded in January this year. After hearing both the side the Magistrate court on Monday acquitted Zinta from all the charges..
