The crime branch has traced the source of poison, which was consumed by a chain snatcher while in custody at LT Marg police station in January. However, the crime branch is yet to lodge a First Information Report (FIR) in the case.
Two accused Shehzad Parmar, 21, and Shahbaz Shaikh, 28, were arrested by the LT Marg police station after they confessed to their involvement in several chain snatching cases in the city.
According to the crime branch officers, the duo had allegedly asked the contractor who supplied food to the inmates in LT Marg lock up to get them mosquito repellent claiming they were tormented by mosquitoes.
“They asked the contractor to get in touch with their uncle and ask him to get a mosquito repellent for them. The duo later consumed this,” said Himanshu Roy, joint commissioner of police (crime).
The officers, however, did not disclose names of the contractor or relatives in question as the investigation of the matter is still on. “We will lodge the FIR once we have finished our investigation,” said Roy.
On January 15, when the police was about to take the duo to a local court to seek an extension of their custody, the two started vomiting. They were immediately rushed to JJ Hospital where the police was informed that they had consumed poison. Shaikh died three days later while Parmar survived, following which the probe was transferred to the crime branch on January 22.
