A cyber café employee, arrested for allegedly cheating a senior citizen from Malvani of Rs 21.5 lakh, has been remanded in police custody till January 31.

The police said Ravikant Jaiswal (19) befriended Vinay Iyer (20), a Class 12 student who used to visit the later’s cyber cafe. Jaiswal came to know that Iyer’s father Chidambram (60) had sold his Marve flat and was waiting for the money. Iyer stayed with his father and elder brother.

The officials said Jaiswal began visiting Iyer’s home and gained Chidambram’s trust by helping him. Chidambram repeatedly asked Jaiswal to withdraw the money from the bank. The investigators added that the accused stole 12 cheques amounting to Rs 17 lakh that he splurged on himself.

“When Chidambram learnt about it, he threatened Jaiswal that he will lodge a police complaint against him,” said Sub-Inspector J.Y. Tambe of Malvani police station.

Iyer, however, offered to save Jaiswal. On December 30, Iyer gave Jaiswal Rs 4.5 lakh in cash and asked him to hand it over to his father. Chidambram handed the same to Iyer to keep it in the locker. Iyer again forwarded the same amount to Jaiswal and this continued for two more times. But the fourth time, Jaiswal fled with the money and spent it on New Year’s Eve.

He was arrested on January 1. The police recovered cash and electronic goods of over Rs 4 lakh from him.
