Victims of cybercrime, especially those of relatively low-profile cases which do not involve huge sums of money, have to run from one place to another to see some action on their complaints.
Oten, the local police do not take cybercrime cases seriously and there is no coordination between the local police and cyber wing, say complainants.
Apart from the plight of the 22-year-old girl who had to run from cyber police to Oshiwara police station to register a complaint after someone put up her phone number on Facebook, there have been other instances in the past where victims have not had an easy run in registering complaints (see box).
Victims have complained that the cyber wing does not entertain complaints of economic offences below Rs2 lakh. While top officers have denied any such limit, sources from the department have confirmed the same.
“While places such as Hyderabad have 12 officers in the cyber wing, we have just six police inspectors and it is not possible to investigate all cases. Hence, we tell some complainants to go to the local police stations,” said an official from the cyber wing.
Joint commissioner of police, crime, Himanshu Roy said, “Cases that require technical expertise are handled by the cyber wing, while simpler ones are handled by the local police.”
Another officer added that on some occasions, there is a delay in getting details from online portals. “At times, these portals give us details after a month. The complainant, who would have approached us a many times in the meantime, thinks we are dragging our feet.”
