After the security guard of Dadar mall was shot at on Wednesday evening by two men on a bike, the police have detained two suspects in connection with the case.
The two have been identified as Santosh Bhalekar and Mukund Ghadigaonkar. Police investigations have revealed the firing was an attempt to scare the mall’s builder for extortion. Involvement of at least four more people is suspected in the case, the police said.
Sources said a text message was sent to the developer a few months ago allegedly by the accused, to demand extortion. He did not pay heed to it, and the firing may have been an attempt to scare the builder, the police said.
“We have detained the suspects and are questioning them,” said a high-ranking officer privy to the investigation.
The police got their leads after the developer told them about the threat text. The police also analysed the close circuit television camera near the mall, which captured the incident, and is a strong evidence in the case.
On Wednesday around 6:15pm at the Gopinath Chavan chowk in Dadar (West), two bike-borne men asked the watchman of a mall the whereabouts of his employer, before firing at him. The bullets missed him.
The Police have prima facie ruled out the involvement of the underworld.
A case of for attempt to murder has been registered under the relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act.
