Around 30 relatives of a patient, who died after delivering a boy, assaulted the doctor and staff and vandalised a private hospital in Badlapur (West) on Thursday morning.

The mob assaulted Dr Jaideep Chatterjee (50) and his brother-in-law Salil Zaveri (45), who dropped in to visit him, said Inspector Vijay Bagal.

They also broke windowpanes, bent ceiling fans and damaged property in the operation theatre of Saikrupa Hospital, Bagal added.

Chatterjee and Zaveri, who suffered minor injuries, have been admitted to Dhanvantari Hospital in Badlapur (E).

On Wednesday, at 11.30 pm, Kavita Deshmukh (28), who was in labour, was brought to the hospital. Within an hour, she gave birth to a boy.

Police said after the "normal delivery", Deshmukh complained of severe pain and started bleeding after her uterus ruptured.

The doctors tried to control the bleeding but as there was no blood available, she died on Thursday morning, police said.

Hearing the news of her death, Deshmukh's relatives started assaulting the doctor and staff. Police said they first broke the CCTV cameras installed on the hospital premises and then started damaging property.

Deshmukh's family refused to talk to the media.

The Badlapur police have registered the offence against the 30 unidentified persons for causing injuries using dangerous weapons or means under the Indian Penal Code.

This incident has brought to fore doctors' concern about their safety.

"We plan to protest against this incident," said Dr Srikant Deshpande of Ashirwad Hospital, Ulhasnagar.
