The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been asked by the Bombay high court to undertake the demolition of shops abutting the platform at Vikhroli station by January 10 if the shop owners fail to submit an undertaking to vacate the premises by March 31.

On Thursday, a division bench of chief justice Mohit Shah and justice Roshan Dalvi was hearing a public interest litigation appealing that the shops be removed.

It was pointed out to the court that some of these shops were lining the railway platform.

The court was also told that there is only one entrance to the railway station, as two gates remain closed due to these shops.

An application filed by the shopkeepers contended that they were not part of the portion to be demolished. The shopkeepers had argued that the corporation had not given them a hearing.

On December 7, the high court had given an ultimatum to the Central Railway authorities and asked them to demolish part of a shopping complex next to the Vikhroli station to facilitate the expansion of a foot-over-bridge (FOB). The Supreme Court had last week upheld the high court's order.

The judges had given an ultimatum since the railways, despite a court order in October, had not demolished the encroachments.

Subsequently, local resident Shivshankar Joshi filed a PIL contending that the shops have blocked access to the railway platform, which is causing difficulties to commuters.

The petition also stated that the shopkeepers had laid stone blockades on the road to prevent access to the booking office at the northern end.
