A 27-year-old woman committed suicide at her residence in Wadala on Monday night. According to the police, Meeta Pandya had withdrawn into a shell ever since her mother passed away two years ago and hardly had any interaction with neighbours or friends. The young woman, the only child of her parents, did not leave behind any suicide note, the police said.
According to the police, the incident came to light around 11.30pm on Monday when Meeta’s father Gaurishankar, who works at a workshop in Antop Hill came home and found her hanging from a ceiling fan. Meeta, who was unemployed, had been living with her father at their first floor residence of the T-30 building in the Pratiksha Nagar area of Wadala.
Police said Meeta used to stay alone at her residence for the major part of the day after her mother’s death. “Her father was out working for most part of the day and she had no siblings either. She neither had many friends,” said an officer from Wadala TT police station requesting anonymity as he is not authorised to speak to the media. Senior inspector NS Jadhav of Wadala TT police station said, “Her mother’s death two years ago due to an ailment had caused Meeta a lot of trauma. She never recovered from it.”
According to the police, Meeta used to keep the door and windows of her home closed to stop others in the chawl from visiting or speaking to her.
The senior inspector said they have registered an accidental death report in the case and suspect no foul play.
