Deputy municipal commissioner (removal of encroachments) Chandrasekhar Rokade was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Friday accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh from a contractor at the former’s office at Cotton Green.

ACB sources said the bribe was to hasten the clearing of the contractor’s files for reimbursement from the BMC.

They said ever since Rokade assumed charge of the encroachment removal department, almost six months ago, he stopped clearing contractors’ files (bills) on some grounds or the other. Finally, a group of four-five contractors approached Rokade with a request to clear the files. “It was then that Rokade asked for Rs 10 lakh to clear the files (collectively),” ACB sources said.

The first instalment of the Rs 10 lakh was allegedly paid to Rokade 10 days ago at his Cotton Green office. On Friday, before paying the second instalment of Rs 1 lakh, one of the contractors approached the ACB. Following a brief inquiry, an FIR was lodged.

On the ACB’s instructions, the contractor went to Rokade’s Cotton Green office with the money. When he was accepting the amount, the ACB sleuths in plainclothes picked him up.
