A couple allegedly committed suicide, on Friday, by hanging themselves with a nylon rope, while their one-and-half year-old daughter kept crying beside them.

Nagraj Nadar (34), a construction worker and his wife Kala lived on the ground floor of a shanty in Subhash Nagar area of Dharavi and their relatives stayed on the upper floor.

The police said that at 11.30 pm, the relatives who were asleep heard the continuous crying of Nadar’s baby girl. When the baby did not stop crying, Nadar’s relatives came down and knocked on the door.

As the couple did not open the door, the victims’ relatives then approached the neighbours for help. The relatives and neighbours then broke open the door and found the couple hanging from the ceiling with nylon ropes. “The baby was just crying near their feet,” said Suhas Naik, a local from the area.

The police reached the spot and conducted a panchnama. No suicide note was found from the spot, the police said.

The police so far have not been able to ascertain the cause behind the alleged suicide. However they suspect marital dispute between them could be the reason for it.

“The relatives of both the deceased have been questioned and their statements are being recorded,” said Hemant Patil, senior police inspector of Dharavi police station.
