If the establishment you are visiting is not in Vakola or Vile Parle (East) you don’t have to fear an unexpected visit from Vasant Dhoble, the assistant commissioner of police who made headlines for conducting raids on errant nightclubs, pubs and lounges in the city.
Contrary to claims that the hockey-wielding cop will be part of raids across the western region, police commissioner Satyapal Singh said on Monday: “Dhoble has been transferred as an assistant commissioner of police and is not going to be attached to any additional commissioner’s special squad. He will function as an assistant commissioner of police.” Singh had quashed the special squads created by his predecessor soon after taking over last month.
Vishwas Nangre-Patil, additional commissioner of police for west region, said that Dhoble is one of the nine assistant commissioners in the region and will be handling only the functioning of his particular division.
“He definitely has an informed network and we will use his resources and knowledge for enforcement. But he will not be part of any special squad,” confirmed Nangre-Patil.
This means Dhoble will be conducting raids in the areas falling under his jurisdiction, that includes Vakola in Santacruz (East) and Vile Parle (East).
“Dhoble will not be a given free-hand in the region as far as the social service branch raids are concerned. He has been allocated the Vakola division and his powers will be limited to it. In any case, the division does not have any high-end pubs and discos,” said another senior official.
