The Municipal Workers Union and Municipal Engineers Association are demanding the disqualification of Shiv Sena corporator from Worli, Sanjay Agaldare who has seven cases of assault against him.
The civic chief has asked them to write to the ward officer after which the disqualification process will be initiated.
Agaldare had allegedly assaulted BMC sub-engineer from Hydraulic department of G- South in Parel, Mahesh Pawar, on Saturday. Over 4,000 engineers and workers of G-South ward (Parel) went on strike on Monday.
Civic chief Swadheen Kshatriya assured the protesters of quick action and better safety after which they stopped the agitation. “The civic chief has agreed to our demand to disqualify him as he has seven cases of assault pending against him since 2005. He has given a nod to put alarm bells in the ward offices for emergency situations. He said law would be amended to book those who attack municipal engineers,” said M. Shetty, general secretary of Civic Workers and Engineers Association.
The state has passed a law to book people who attack doctors and other medical workers. The civic engineers have demanded for the same law.
Agaldare said: “I had only verbally abused the engineer who was asking for Rs 5,000 per connection from the slumdwellers. If the engineer proves that I have assaulted him, I will resign.” He had approached the sessions court for anticipatory bail. The court has asked him to be present in court on Thursday.
