A two-week-old girl found abandoned in the radiology department of KEM Hospital in Parel on Sunday is under the care of doctors and nurses.
Doctors said the baby, now in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, had been found at around 10 am on Sunday when the clerks in the X-ray department’s cash counter heard her crying. The X-ray department does not have a CCTV camera.
“The baby was brought in the morning by one of the guards. We checked her health and admitted her. The police were also informed soon,” said Dr Pravin Bangar, senior assistant medical officer. “She has mild pneumonia but is stable. We will let the police decide what to do with her once she is fit,” he said.
Dr Sanjay Oak, dean of KEM, said the hospital authorities did not know the identity of the baby’s parents. “The baby was found dumped in our radiology department. As is standard procedure, we took care of her and treated her. It is now up to the police to find her parents,” he said.
“We have lodged a report based on the guard’s account and are working towards tracing the parents," said Vikram Patil, senior inspector at the Bhoiwada police station.
