The Powai police arrested a 19-year-old domestic help within 24 hours of him stealing gold ornaments and cash totalling over Rs 8 lakh from his employer’s residence.
This despite the fact that the employers knew just the accused’s first name and that he was from Jharkhand.
On Sunday, Sudhir Yadav had allegedly stolen jewellery worth Rs 8 lakh and Rs 88,000 cash from textile businessman Vinit Arya’s Powai residence.
“Yadav was employed at Arya’s house for three months last year,” said Assistant Police Inspector Sahadu Waral.
When Arya’s domestic help quit on October 28, Yadav asked Arya to hire him again and started work the next day.
But he struck after two days when Arya and his wife were attending a wedding.
“On Sunday night, while Arya’s father and two children were asleep, Yadav fled with the ornaments and cash,” Waral said.
“They were not able to provide any other details except that his first name and that he hailed from Jharkhand. We checked the lists of commuters on trains and flights bound for Jharkhand. We also kept a watch at Om Sai Nagar in Sion-Koliwada, where most migrants from Jharkhand live,” he added.
Their decision proved lucky. Yadav came to meet one of his relatives in the area on Monday afternoon and Arya, who was with the team, recognised him.
“We caught Yadav who was carrying the bag with all the valuables and cash,” Waral added.
