A domestic help brutally assaulted one Jayantilal Mehta, 90, and his granddaughter, Nikita, 36, at their residence in Juhu on Sunday.
According to the statement given by the victim, accused Imtiaz Lahiri got furious and attacked Nikita with a pestle after she found him in the kitchen around 11.30pm, when he was allegedly trying to steal something from the flat. When Mehta tried to come to Nikita’s rescue, Lahiri attacked him as well.
After assaulting, Lahiri fled from the flat and was hiding in Kandivli. Another domestic help, who lives in the house, alerted other family members about the incident. The DN Nagar police was informed and the cops arrested Lahiri from Kandivli on Monday sensing his mobile location.
“Lahiri was hired recently by the family and we checked that they had not registered his details with the local police station. But we got his mobile number from the family and traced his location. He was arrested from Kandivli,” said senior inspector DS Nalavade of the DN Nagar police station.
“During interrogation, Lahiri said his intention was to rob the family because they had assaulted him in the morning and made him sleep in the passage area of the flat,” said Nalavade.
According to the police, Mehta lives in the fifth-floor apartment on Gulmohar Road with his son, daughter-in-law, Meenaxi, 62, and granddaughter.
The family has a pharmaceutical business and has two flats in the same apartment. The incident occurred around 11.30pm when Nikita came home and found Lahiri in the kitchen. When she inquired what was he doing there at such an odd hour, Lahiri got furious and without telling anything he picked up a pestle and started hitting her.
When Nikita screamed for help, Jayantilal, who was in another room, rushed. Lahiri then turned towards Jayantilal and hit him too with the pestle, said a police officer.
The other domestic help then rushed to call Nikita’s mother for help. On hearing that, Lahiri dropped the pestle and fled the house, added the officer.
Jayantilal and Nikita suffered severe injuries and both were rushed to a private hospital in Juhu. Nikita was still in the hospital till the filing of the report, while Jayantilal was discharged on Monday evening.
