Chief Minister Ashok Chavan has taken a sympathetic approach towards the 18 students of G.S. Medical College at KEM Hospital who were arrested for ragging their juniors.
“We don’t want to ruin their [the students’] academic year. We have already taken action,” Chavan told journalists at the Congress office on Tuesday.
The students, who were studying physiotherapy, were arrested and then released on individual bonds last weekend. They were also expelled from hostel. The victims and various organisations, however, have demanded stricter action like their dismissal from the current academic term. Chavan did not seem to be in favour of that immediately. “The law will take its own course,” he said.
The CM also gave Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots a clean chit and did not blame the film for influencing the accused. Medical Education Minister Dr Vijay Gavit had said on Monday that he would ask the cabinet to watch the film in view of allegations and suggest cuts, if necessary.
Chavan said it was wrong to say films only had a bad influence on society. He explained how films like Dahej had inspired people to shun dowry demands. “The censor board is there to take appropriate action,” he said.
