A case of theft has been registered against an unidentified person who entered the Vithal temple in Borivli (West) on Monday and stole two donation boxes kept inside the temple.

Local residents who had gathered outside the MHB Colony police station turned violent. The situation was brought under control after assuring them that the accused will be traced soon.

An unidentified person broke open the lock and entered the temple. The accused reportedly broke open one of the two donation boxes inside the temple.

The other donation box, which was found near the temple, was broken and empty.

Around 5am when one of the temple workers came in and found a donation box broken and other missing, he informed the temple authorities and subsequently, a complaint was lodged.

“How much money has been stolen cannot be ascertained as the donation boxes are never opened till they are full. According to the temple authorities the stolen amount could be over Rs 60,000” said Additional Commissioner of Police (North region) Ramroa Pawar.
